Ziefeld's Farewell
Posted: 20 years ago - Mar 31, 2006Thank you to the Admin Staff at URNA for reposting an article in The Washington Blade. The closing of Ziegfeld's and other clubs in the SE warehouse district of DC. It will indeed mark a sad occasion. As a frequent patron of Zig's( as we locals like to call it), it holds very special memories for me. It was the first public place I went to "en femme" . I met my very first TG friend there and have made many other TG friends there that I still have deep bonds with. It was a definate coming of age for me. It has had the best drag shows I have ever seen anywhere, including Atlanta's Backstreet, Charlie Brown's. The Ladies of Illusion were just that, illusionist, not pre-op barbie dolls with more plastic than DuPont. Artisans and true preformers. Such greats like the former Miss Gay America Sabrina White or the unforgetable Billie Ross. The true "Queen Mother" of the house, Miss Ella Fitzgerald is one amazing performer, MC and all around grand hostess. The bar staff of Wayne and Ron are the tops, bar none. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Zig's and the other clubs for helping bring a sene of identiy to my life that until then, I was missing. I Love All of You and will miss the old venue. My prayers are for a speedy return in a new venue in which I can further enjoy friends and fine performances.
